SpongeBob: Order Up Review

In an effort I imagine to get people to see The Smurfs, we have a new (old) SpongeBob short paired with it in “Order Up”.

SpongeBob excited for the next order. Nickelodeon (2025)

To give some context here, it’s believed the short was originally developed in 2011-2012, presumably for release in 2015 with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. That didn’t happen for some reason, and now it has finally released a decade later.

The roughly 2 minute 30 second short sees SpongeBob driving Squidward up the wall, enthusiastically pinging the bell for a new order at the Krusty Krab.

The “Order Up” trailer, dubbed “The Lost Episode”.

Squidward initially is just frustrated with this, slinging the food over customers casually. This frustration builds though, and there’s a genuinely funny montage as Squidward finds creative ways to destroy the bell. My favourite being getting a group of marathon runners to stampede over it!

However, upon grinding the bell into powder and tipping it into SpongeBob’s head (perfectly normal), SpongeBob finds tapping his nose causes the bell sound. He naturally does this repeatedly, causing Squidward to burst out of the Krusty Krab, presumably to curl up in a darkened room.

All in all, this short was really fun! It was odd seeing the early season 9 on-model animation in 2025, but it was very nostalgic. There was no dialogue here and, similar to “Reef Blower”, relied on some clever visual humour.

I recommend watching “Order Up”, but I’m not sure it’s worth putting yourself through the movie afterwards. Perhaps find other means of catching it instead.

Chris.
