As a final bow for CAT (Campaign Amateur Theatre), they could not have delivered a better performance!
Evita is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The story outlines how Eva Perón came from humble beginnings to becoming the First Lady of Argentina. Directed by Trevor Babbs with Musical direction by Keeley Wickham and choreography by Jo Rix, this production of Evita was in safe hands. The creative team have developed a strong performance and their teamwork is on full display. This is final production of CAT before changing to Ely Theatre Company. We wish them all the best with this transition and look forward to Made In Dagenham later this year!
The set is well used, with props coming in and out to create new scenery. Similarly, the lighting really helps complement the production: making it more focused at certain times. Evita always has brilliant costumes and this show delivers, with colourful and vibrant clothing. The ensemble in this show is bursting with energy, fully embracing the incredible score. Their choreography was well performed and their enthusiasm came across to the audience well. Augustin Magaldi is played by Jack Barry on the opening night performance. Barry’s vocals were strong and he performed with confidence on stage. The Mistress is played by Amy Bungard. Bungard sings one of the my favourite songs in the first half ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’ and was phenomenal. Her vocals were perfect and she performed the emotion of the scene very well too.
Julian Hammon plays Juan Perón, Eva’s partner and president of Argentina. His dynamics alongside Kindleysides-Seidl were strong and his vocals were very good. Tom Slater-Watson plays Che, a narrator who guides the audience on Eva Perón’s life. Che is a challenging role and Slater-Watson delivers it powerfully and confidently. His vocals in all songs were outstanding, especially during the more confrontational songs, and his dynamics with the rest of the cast felt the most polished. Jasper Kindleysides-Seidl plays Eva Duarte de Perón, the former First Lady of Argentina. Kindleysides-Seidl was able to embody who Eva was as a person, bringing this into her acting. Her rendition of ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ was brilliant and the audience loved it!
