As we head towards the 10th July for the release of Zombies: Dawn of the Vampire, I thought it would be fun to rank the top 10 songs from the Zombie franchise. I’m sure this will be outdated when the new movie comes out as there will be some fantastic songs!
10: Gotta Find Where I Belong
Zed and Addison have been having a rocky time since the werewolves have entered Seabrook. Addison continues to feel that she doesn’t belong whilst Zed feels bad about his actions earlier. This song comes from these feelings. The duet is real sweet and it shows both Meg and Milo’s voices really well. In the movie, both actors do a great job of portraying their emotions and you start to feel bad for Addison (even though having white hair is really not that big a deal).
9: Stand
The real first power ballad in the series. Addison is watching Zed, Eliza and Bonzo being taken away due to the Aceys and Bucky’s manipulation of their Z-bands. Addison believes that she needs to help others see the zombies for who they are. In doing so, she must be her true self: revealing the white hair. Bucky also sings part of this song, helping to build beautiful harmonies with Addison. Even though the response to the white hair is ridiculous, Addison shows us all how to be brave: an asset we all need sometimes in our lives.
8: Exceptional Zed
Mountain College does not allow monsters into it (which is odd that they even have that rule considering Seabrook seems to be the only place with monsters). Zed is the representative for monster-kind and needs to get in for equality. However, he’s kinda freakin out and not in the best way. Luckily, all of his friends are here to cheer him up and support him. The scene allows for the whole cast to dance with a giant Zed puppet: one way to impress the recruiter. Milo sings the song really well and the reprise helps too, always making this tune a good time!
7: Flesh & Bone
Revolution! The werewolves have been poisoned by silver as they attempt to stop the nuclear power plant from being destroyed. However, Addison is totally cheering them on and gets the zombies to side with her as well. Each group gets to sing a part in this song in a very ‘revolution’ like piece. The dancing is fun with them splashing around the sewers. I’m not sure why they’re still dancing in the power plant as it is about the explode but Addison is very quirky.
6: We Own the Night
Now this is a fun song. Here we get to meet our werewolves: Wyatt, Willa and Wynter. They plan to break into the high school and steal back the moonstone. Chandler (Willa) gets to sing some fantastic notes in this song, followed well with the backing vocals from Wyatt and Wynter. Furthermore, the dancing in the movie is really upbeat and unique to the werewolves. This is definitely a song you’d stick on at night and feel empowered to sing along too!
5: More Than a Mystery
Now, this is one that only true Zombie fans know. Between Zombies 2 and 3, there was a short series called Zombies: Addison’s Moonstone Mystery. In this special show, Vanna (a vampire) is introduced whilst Addison tries to find her place in the world. This song comes from Addison trying to figure out the mystery of Vanna. The tune is great and feels very mysterious. It is also odd that vampires are already in the Zombies world (making me wonder whether this will be mentioned in Zombies 4). I would definitely recommend listening to this song (or watch the short show).
4: Alien Invasion
An interesting way to start a musical movie. The gang are celebrating the end of the academic year when aliens invade Seabrook. This involves them shooting lasers and blowing up cars. Most of our main characters hide whilst Addison considers how cool it could be to meet the aliens (not her smartest move). Then again, most of the cast want to film it as the invasion is ‘kinda cool’. The song is fun and fasted paced, giving everyone a chance to sing. We also get a classic DCOM dance battle, similar to Camp Rock 2 It’s On dance. What’s not to love?
3: Call to the Wild
A banging tune. Addison is introduced to the werewolf hangout (a dark cave) whilst Wyatt invites her to join the ‘wild’. The tune includes vocals for Wyatt, Willa and Addison as they discuss the possibility of Addison being the ‘Great Alpha’. In the movie, Addison does a strange hopscotch game and then gets a make over after doing a dance battle. Meg and Chandler’s vocals together make for a great song: making me wish they get a duet in the future instalments of this franchise.
2: Someday
This is THE duet! Zed and Addison have just started to get to know each other. There are clear sparks between the two of them regardless of the controversy in their relationship. To discuss their feelings, the two sing about how ‘someday’ they hope it will be okay for them to be together. The scene in the movie is memorised in my brain as it features fun visuals and great choreography. Both Meg and Milo sound great together and their voices harmonise well. It is no surprise that this is the song that comes back every movie: it really does summarise the message of the Zombies movies about inclusivity.
1: Ain’t No Doubt About It
Though I love ‘Someday’, this song is my favourite! Zed and Addison are discussing their future and how they will (hopefully) stay together. They both show doubts on their relationships but are able to lean on each other to forget these worries. The song is upbeat, fast and often one I want to sing along too. The scene in the movie includes great dancing, with great choreography. Unfortunately the aliens do sing in the song but this doesn’t affect the quality. Disney must know how good this song is as it is making a return in Zombies 4 which I cannot wait to see!
