Say IT! opens Friday 21st August at The Libra Theatre Cafe, following the story of two sisters stuck in lockdown during a zombie apocalypse. Learn more about what you can expect:

1: What inspired you to put two sisters into a zombie apocalypse?

We want to explore a sibiling relationship where it was once beautiful and turns traumatising. Sisters have a very special bond that we find either are very affectionate, or very hostile. Therefore we want to explore the two extreme situations as well.

2: Why did you write a two-handler play?

When I was studying in Drama School, Cherry Kwan, my co writer and actor is a lovely person and we clicked almost immediately, with a similar culture background, we bond over food, family and the love for acting. So I thought, why not write something for us two? We act like sisters already, might as well bring the energy to the stage for everyone to see!

3: How would you describe the sisters’ relationship at the beginning and at the end?

Ruth and Izzy starts off with this easy banter about the zombie apocalypse, going out and getting Vitamin D. However as the play goes on, the audience began to see the underlying tension between the two sisters. Unresolved questions and trauma comes out with a secrets surfaces. In the end, they are able to resolve it in the end, but whether it was a complete resolve, or is there still some lingering tension? Well that’ll be for our audience to decide.

4: What do you think the zombies represent, beyond a threat?

On a surfaces level, the zombie virus represents terminal illness, when one is facing the ultimate death, and was given a chance to amend their broken relationship with someone they love. How would the love one react, and how would the person try to make amends?

5: What’s been the biggest challenge in creating Say IT?

The biggest challenge is finally putting our first play on the stage! SAY IT is the debut show of The Yokai Theatre Collective, therefore both of us, Cherry and I are figuring everything for the first time! Ticket sales, marketing, sound and lighting, everything is new to us, and so far it’s looking brilliant and we can’t wait for you all to witness the beauty of this play!

6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating Say IT?

Working with my friends is the most enjoyable part definitely! I always wanted to co write something with her, and be able to do just that and more brings me a lot of joy. Then to work with a director that I had long admired is also such an honour too!
