Rumplestiltskin by the Attleborough Players Review

From straw to gold, Rumplestiltskin brings laughs by the bucketload!

Rumplestiltskin is a brand new pantomime, planning on bringing the family together for a great laugh during the cold and wet February month. The show follows the story of Rumplestiltskin (Georgina Sexton) and the magical journey this entails. When Emily (Tiana Cooper) is imprisoned, she turns to Rumplestiltskin to save her. But, magic always comes at a price… This pantomime has been written by Vicky Barrett and Jay Coppin. I enjoyed how they mentioned their love for Robert Carlyle and Once Upon A Time in the programme: an actor and show that I adore. Directed by Sarah Browne, a first time director at the Attleborough Players, the show was bound to be joyful and fun! The Attleborough Players are a great company, focused on bringing brilliant and high quality shows to Attleborough. Their vocal performance is always very strong. Previously, they performed Shrek the musical which we enjoyed lots. Due to this, we were excited to see how the players get on with a pantomime

The set worked well for the production, and regardless of a few technical issues, the show ran smoothly. The ensemble brought some of the best vocals and harmonies I’ve heard for a long time: working incredibly well together as a unit and individually. The musical numbers chosen for this show were really solid, giving a nice mix of modern and classic. I appreciated the Wicked musical number, as well as the finale song. The cast overall looked like they were having lots of fun, which came across to the audience well.

Tiana Cooper as Emily had a big role and she delivered this well, with great acting and vocals. Similarly, Georgina Farrow as the Fairy Godmother gave a magical and whimsy performance: giving a great vocal riff in the end of act 1 song. Every pantomime needs a dame and Martin Godfrey was a fun, colourful and entertaining dame.

Georgina Sexton was brilliant in Shrek as Pinocchio and brings the same energy to this role. You can feel the influences of Once Upon a Time in her Rumplestiltskin: giving a menacing but fun villain who we hate to love. Sexton also brings great energy on stage, really uplifting every scene she is in.

However the stand out performance has to be Tiernan Cooper as Jack. We are huge Pippin fans and Cooper’s version of ‘Corner of the Sky’ was phenomenal! Not to mention, each time he was able to deliver on comedy and choreography too. The Attleborough Players are very lucky to have Cooper in their production, and I’m intrigued to see his growth in future productions!

The cast and crew did a great job, working together to make this show a success. We wish them all the best on the rest of their run. Book your tickets now for Rumplestiltskin before the 14th February!
