Shrek Jr by the Stamford Showstoppers Youth Review

It’s a big bright beautiful February: perfect for Shrek the musical!

Shrek Jr follows the story of Shrek the musical closely; with certain parts cut out to make the show a lot quicker for younger performers. Following Shrek’s journey to save Princess Fiona, he learns about friendship and true love. We enjoy the Shrek musical here at Rhombus Rota, having watched it a few times already. We also really enjoy the Stamford Showstoppers productions, having watched many of their previous shows (such as Matilda Jr, Come From Away etc). With this in mind, we knew that Shrek Jr would be a blast!

The set was well utilised, using the animated scenes to help tell the story. Similarly the tower worked well for multiple uses throughout the show. The costumes were all fun and worked well for the magical world being portrayed. Throughout the show, the ensemble consistently looked to be having lots of fun, which came across really well: making the show more enjoyable to watch for the audience too!

There are two casts for this show and we saw Team Imy. We wish them all the best in the run and the Team Freya too! Ellie Haines plays the Dragon. Haines did a great version of ‘Forever’: showing the fun number really well on stage. Lord Farquaad was played by Otto Forkin. Forkin did a really good job considering the role is played on your knees, making it difficult for any actor. Isla Joyce plays Princess Fiona. Joyce’s vocals were the best in the cast, having a brilliant moment in ‘Morning Person’. I also think Joyce’s acting was commendable during ‘I Know it’s Today’: acting the unhinged moments really well. Donkey is played by Ryan Jennings. Jennings worked well alongside Neal to portrayed the iconic duo. He brought some great donkey enjoy which is needed for the role. The titular character of Shrek is played by Imogen Neal. Neal’s vocals were really solid throughout the songs, as well as some great acting too! Neal did a really good job at leading the cast!

The Stamford Showstoppers are also doing Little Shop of Horrors this week, which we would love to come back for. Book your tickets now for Shrek Jr!
