A quirky and unique take on a classic story, set in the modern day!
Prints Charming is a play written by Tru Holland. The story follows Cathy, a romance-addict reader who dreams of love which she reads about in her books. When she breaks up with her boyfriend, Kevin, Cathy meets some new love interests who are similar to the ones she has read about. Will it be as easy as she thinks to choose between three romantic archetypes to find her true love? The story is modern and unique, with lots of small scenes telling Cathy’s encounters. However, it still has all the makings of a classic rom-com, with all the turmoil and drama. This twist makes the material feel fresh whilst also comforting, with story elements that audiences can resonate with throughout.
Fariha Alam Bhuiyan directs this production, with Sophia Emmett as assistant director/producer/fight coordinator and Emma Dylong as assistant director/publicity manager. The three of them have developed a cohesive piece of theatre, showing great teamwork between them. Though the pacing was slow at times, the material helped to bring the audience back into the show: often with lots of laughter. The use of audiobooks, narrated by Monty Burton, helped to add comedy between scenes also works effectively.
Daisy Burnip plays Coffee Stall Owner and Police Officer. Burnip added some additional value in her appearance and was well utilised in the show. Ruby Redwood plays Jazmine and Moira. Redwood was fantastic at being Moira, with the snarky that the character entails. Isha Ali plays Alison, Sexy Lift Man and Gina. Ali kept appearing as different characters which kept the audience on their toes. The way she moved between these characters was effective and she did a great job. Rhys Leconte plays Mr Willian Farcy. Leconte brought elegance to his archetype which made his performance very humorous to watch. Gabirel Nilsson plays Snakeo Dralfoy. Nilsson got to wear a hilarious outfit whilst round Cathy’s home: making the audience laughing with each line delivery. Luc Morris plays Vinnie. Morris puts on a great accent which works perfectly for his archetype. His confidence on stage came across strongly during his scenes. Edward Badege plays Kevin. Badege was comedically great in his role, having lots of comedy moments whilst trying to be ‘alpha’ for Kathy. Badege has a caring nature to his performance, which made us root for him. Kiana Mckone plays Catherine ‘Cathy’ Moore. Mckone is an optimistic and enthusiastic lead for the production, being a joy to watch on stage. Her dynamics with each man was entertaining and her journey was well received.
Prints Charming continues to run until Saturday 30th May. Don’t miss this joyful production!
