Your Favo(u)rite American Woman opens Tuesday 11th August at the Canal Cafe Theatre, opening audiences up to C’s lecture including music, choreography and slideshow presentations. Learn more about what to expect:
1: What was the initial spark that inspired Your Favo(u)rite American Woman?
Your Favourite American Woman began with the songs first; throughout 2025, I found myself personally writing songs about my identity, about my work as an actor, and about America in its current state. The script came about from connecting the common threads in the music.
2: C is described as someone who’s very eager to please. What interested you about that characteristic?
This is a character trait that I share with C, and its something that I’ve had a lot of experience with. Writing C this way let me process my personal growth from my people-pleasing past, while also exploring a more heightened, specific motivation for the people pleasing from C.
3: How does C’s professional and personal identities collide throughout the play?
Everything C does is motivated by her personal life and feelings. She is someone whose emotional baggage is so heavy, she doesn’t; even know she’s carrying it, because she’s had it for her whole life. Her professional choices in the play, ranging from show business starlet to buttoned up teacher, are just different masks hiding the same motivation.
4: How do you blend different storytelling elements together?
A word that has been present in my mind throughout this whole process was “collage.” The art of taking a little bit of everything to create something bigger than the sum of its parts is very attractive to me. I suppose this mindset made blending the songs, the monologues, and the lessons together that much more familiar.
5: Were there any historical events or themes that particularly influenced the writing?
Oh, so much. In fact, I reference the whole of America’s 250-year-old history a few times in the show. Something I bring up is the fact that, for being such a young nation, ESPECIALLY in comparison to the UK, the USA has an almost absurd amount of international conflict and political interference. The writing in the show encourages audiences (and C herself) the earnest question: ‘why?’
6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating Your Favo(u)rite American Woman?
For me, getting to see the show come closer to its “final” form, with Sofia and Alara (my director and AD/choreographer, respectively) in the room, is the absolute best. It’s such an hono(u)r and a privilege to get to do what we do together, and the fact that it’s my work and performance on stage…I couldn’t ask for a better experience, really.
