Two Strangers and a Clipboard opens Friday 14th August at the Etcetera Theatre, following the story of Sam and Gary meeting in a court waiting room. Learn more about what to expect:
1: What inspired the idea of a society where identity is assigned?
Uh, our own society! So many structures and frameworks in society tell us who we are, whether parents/family, education, workplaces, and then constructs like gender, sexuality, etc. It was very much born from my own frustrations at having to live a life in a way I didn’t choose in many ways and how that made me feel my identity was being chosen for me.
2: What questions do you want audiences to ask about the systems portrayed and how does this relate to real life?
How can we show up as allies? What does empathy mean? Do we need permission to be our true selves? I think if you feel it, you can relate.
3: What drew you to the relationship between Sam and Gary?
It isn’t romantic, I am not sure they will be friends after the play ends, they are so at odds with each other in many ways. The Oasis vs Celine Dion element sort of demonstrates that. But unlikely people can enjoy either and sometimes you can enjoy both! Their relationship is one where you are sometimes more honest and open and vulnerable with a stranger than someone you have known for years.
4: How much of the play has changed from its original concept to the version audiences see now?
It started as a 10 minute scratch with Gaby Coleman and other actors last year. I didn’t know what I was writing. When we left the read, Gaby grabbed me and said “if you ever develop this, I want to be part of it”. I was a new playwright and thought “this actor thinks I’m a real writer, this is embarrassing!” Yet here we are!
5: What responses from audiences have surprised you most?
I wrote it from my heart and my experience but people from all walks of life have told me how much they identify with it. I would never tell a story from the trans community because it isn’t my story to tell, but that trans audience members come up to me to feel seen just blows me away.
6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating Two Strangers and a Clipboard?
I directed our preview and was so so proud of that version selling out, getting four star glowing reviews and winning an award. (We’ve got a real director in place now!)
