An instrument-free concert is taking over the Camden Fringe with MixTones Presents: Human Instruments.
The a cappella group MixTones was created just over a year ago, but the chemistry its members share and the talent they display are undeniable. Each singer is unique, owing to their different vocal ranges and particular talents for lead melodies, backing vocals, or rhythm-setting beatboxing. Together, the group creates a concert where the lack of conventional instruments on stage is taken as an advantage.
The setlist was varied, meaning that there was something for everyone in the audience. From timeless classics and contemporary hits by artists such as Ed Sheeran or Dua Lipa to music from Toy Story 2 or Interstellar, the performances move between genres and styles without breaking a sweat. The variety of the selection keeps the show fresh and makes it easy for audience members of all ages and musical tastes to find something to enjoy.
The energy in the room remained high throughout the concert despite the hot temperature of the venue. This experience was boosted by the performers’ obvious enjoyment of being on stage. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and there is a genuine sense that they are having as much fun performing the songs as the audience is listening to them. Overall, what makes Human Instruments particularly impressive is discovering just how much can be achieved with the human voice alone. Beats, basslines, harmonies, and melodies come together to recreate songs that we normally associate with full bands or orchestras.
