An interactive opportunity to decide the future of criminals, Trial by AI: Live is running at Barons Court Theatre.
Created by Lexi Sale and directed by Ben Gall, Trial by AI: Live is a unique piece of interactive theatre that puts the audience at the heart of the story. From the moment you walk into the room, each attendee is personally asked if this is their first time being a member of the jury. This immediately starts setting the scene for what is to follow, making it clear that this is not a conventional show. Rather than simply watching events unfold, the audience actively determines the fate of the accused.
The show is hosted by William Allam, who plays an extremely over-the-top TV presenter akin to Caesar Flickerman from The Hunger Games. While his character is not meant to be likeable, he has a magnetic personality and a way of capturing the audience’s attention that is very memorable. He also drives the comedic side of the show, which balances out the drama that is the backbone of the experience. As the host, he introduces the concept of the trial to the audience before presenting each of the three accused people, played by Emily Hawley, Ricky Sharma, and Lexi Sale. Their personalities, charges, and backgrounds are revealed through the interrogation conducted by an AI interface (voiced by Lola Cranleigh).
Beyond its entertainment value, Trial by AI: Live also leaves the audience with plenty to think about. The show raises questions about our dependence on technology and artificial intelligence. It also makes one wonder whether we may be giving technology too much power, particularly when we let it influence decisions that may have serious consequences.
While there are some aspects that may require polishing in the future, Trial by AI: Live is an unusual, unforgettable, and enjoyable experience. We attended Trial by AI: Live at its first performance as part of the Camden Fringe. This show will continue running at the Barons Court Theatre until 29 August.
