How far would you go for a craving? Causa: The Trial of the Illegal Potato closes today at the LowMAC as part of the Lambeth Fringe.

Written by Raquel Bartra and directed by Cameron Krogh Stone, Causa: The Trial of the Illegal Potato tells the story of a Peruvian immigrant who ends up in court for trying to satisfy a culinary craving.

The script is humorous, intelligent, and deeply personal. At a surface level, the backdrop of the story reflects the experience of many immigrants who struggle to find the right ingredients to cook food that tastes like home. However, upon closer inspection, the show presents how alienating it can be to try to remain rooted in your own culture while being an immigrant in a country whose citizens may not even know where in the world your country is.

The cast features Betsy Loza, Sammy Attalah, Chloë Wigmore, Cameron Krogh Stone, and Lara Vivone. They were all fantastic in their roles and made the experience thoroughly enjoyable. Loza was convincing in her role as Juana (Joanna for anyone struggling with pronunciation), as she captured the nuances of what it feels like to be a Peruvian immigrant. Attalah, Wigmore, and Krogh Stone provide plenty of laughs with their sharp delivery and bursts of physical comedy. While Vivone had fewer scenes than the rest, she managed to make a lasting impression with her portrayal of the potato.

As a Peruvian immigrant myself, I found it joyful to see a show about my country in London, made even more special by the fact that some of the cast and creatives were Peruvian or Latin American too. I was especially delighted by the little gift at the end of the show. It was a nice touch to be given some causa and I’m sure this gesture was appreciated by Peruvians and non-Peruvians alike.
