This poignant and powerful play has been brought to life by an intriguing new theatre company!

Wasted is a piece written by Kae Tempest and has been staged by Workhouse Productions. The story follows three friends who are in their mid 20s crossing their lives at the anniversary of their best friend Tony. They attempt to reconnect and explore themselves with the support of their friend Tony who is no longer alive. Emotions feel raw, fresh and confusing as they navigate their life choices. Workhouse Productions is an exciting new theatre company who we’re excited to see grow.

The piece is directed by Emily Rodrigues who has implemented direction which feels realistic and authentic. The use of microphones to speak to the audiences is inventive, though I’m unsure on the deeper impact of these moments. However, I feel the play works well with these moments. Alongside Rodrigues, Anna Cecila’s set design, with assistant from Lara Wilson and Lara Daly, is impactful and localises the piece into a particular setting which is cleverly drafted with Mimi Browne’s lighting design, Ryan Nicholas and Oscar Mangini’s sound design: working well together to combine into one artistic voice.

Charlotte is played by Caitlin Florence-Rose who is able to embody the schoolteacher role with the challenges the education faced: showing that internal complexities to the character. Danny is played by Eman Dare who works as an aspiring dreamer who may hide from the realities of real life. The cast is rounded out by Ted played by Freddie Farrell who is able to struggling with where his life has led. The poignant and raw emotions felt across Florence-Rose, Dare and Farrell allow for a moving piece which feels as relevant today as ever.

Wasted is the first production by Workhouse Productions. Keep an eye out for future shows!
