A powerful, raw and reflective piece of theatre has arrived in Norfolk!
George and the Drag Queen is a new piece of theatre by Pipeline Theatre currently touring the UK. The play is set at a village fête as we meet two first-aid volunteers. This specific event also has a Lebanese Drag Queen called Eliana Sultana to spice up the festival. In a strange twist of fete, their combined lives entangle into an explosive scene. Pipeline Theatre is a critically acclaimed Cornish company which have developed fantastic productions across the UK. We had the opportunity to learn more about the production with writer and director Jon Welch (link here), after which we were incredibly excited to see the production live!
George and the Drag Queen is a tender, deep and authentically driven piece supported by a brilliantly executed narrative and passionate acting. The story is heartfelt and emotional, making the characters feel real on stage. Jon Welch is the writer and director of play. Welch’s storytelling is raw and compelling: making for an intriguing exploration of refugees and personal relationships. Jude Munden design is clever with the tent being able to shift perspective to allow for action to take part. Alongside Welch and Munden, Stanley Welch composed the piece with cleverly and thoughtfully produced compositions.
The cast consists of three actors, whose dynamics with each other are masterfully explored. Kiko Gomersall plays Elias, Beck Watts plays Maddy and Alan Munden plays George. Gomersall’s vocal performance was strong and his exploration of Elias’ past was captivating to watch. Maddy’s ideology and views are reflected with excellence through Watts’ performance. Munden is able to explore the trauma of George’s past well through his characterisation. Gomersall, Watts and Munden work effectively together to allow these characters to come to life.
George and the Drag Queen continues to tour, going to Great Yarmouth tomorrow. Book now!
Tickets for the production were provided complimentary. Many thanks to the Pipeline Theatre for organising and we wish you all the best with the remainder of the tour!
