Back in 1999, Mamma Mia debuted in London’s West End. At the time, all audiences thought they were walking into a jukebox musical about love, family and the joys of life. But beneath the glitz and glamour, beneath the platform boots, beneath the power of ABBA lurks a mystery greater than anything anyone has ever imagined…. Who is Sophie’s father?
The musical suggests that Sophie has three possible fathers: Sam, Bill and Harry. Though, none of these seem like a logical, clear solution to the question. With a show based on high stake emotions and plot twists, there is only one logical solution. This leads us to the truth to this age old question. Sophie’s father is….
Santa Claus!
Here are the clear clues:
1: Donna’s Cryptic Codes:
In Mamma Mia, we see Sophie track down her potential dads by reading her mother’s (Donna) diary. In the diary, Donna uses lots of “dot, dot, dot” commentary. This is very strange, especially for someone’s personal diary. Potentially Donna was hiding the truth, hiding the Christmas spirit. She couldn’t write that she had a night with Santa so keeping this hidden with the ‘dots’ is the next best choice.
2: Greek Vacations:
It is clearly established that Donna had Sophie whilst on the Greek island Kalokairi. Santa often works very hard throughout the year, especially on Christmas day, at the North Pole. Where else would Santa go for his holidays than a beautiful Greek island? It would just make logical sense that Santa ended up on the joyful island of Kalokairi, where he first met Donna.
3: Sophie’s Jolly Spirit:
Consider Sophie’s personality, the daughter of Santa. She screams ‘Christmas spirit’. She is unfailingly optimistic throughout the show: clear Santa energy. She is eager to bring everyone together and bursts into musical numbers, a very magical experience. Sophie has clearly inherited her Dad’s love of people and this is shown throughout the show.
In the end, while Mamma Mia never openly confirms Sophie’s parentage, the clues clearly point to the jolliest man on the Earth! Of course, the idea is wonderfully ridiculous: yet it captures the magic of the world Mamma Mia creates. And whether Santa is truly Sophie’s father or simply a playful possibility, the theory invites us to believe in something heartwarming, whimsical and delightful improbable.
Have a Merry Mamma Mia!
