A nautilus adventure recreated by a talented group of youngsters!
The Spongebob Musical is a 2016 musical based on the beloved TV Show SpongeBob SquarePants. As it is the 10th anniversary of the musical, it was the perfect to revisit this underwater production! The story follows SpongeBob as he goes about his normal day, when suddenly a disastrous event threatens the existence of Bikini Bottom. With Sandy and Patrick in tow, SpongeBob sets out to rescue Bikini Bottom from the end of the world. Meanwhile, Plankton is eager to use the disaster for his own gain: attempting to sabotage SpongeBob and Friends. The musical is a favourite amongst Rhombus Rota and boasts a phenomenal score! This production was the Senior cast of the show by Act II Theatre Company. Act II Theatre Company is a fantastic organisation set to offer excellent Art activities for children of many ages. With all this in tow, I was ready to dive straight into the show!
The band did a brilliant job of playing each of these songs, helping to elevate the strong voices on stage. Similarly the lighting was used effectively throughout the enhance the performances. The set was limited but worked for the production: allowing a large ensemble to be present on stage throughout many scenes. Set pieces brought on and off were well decorated and suited the SpongeBob theme. The entire cast were very solid, giving a well rehearsed and practiced performance. Each of them felt in character and offered something different for the audience to watch.
Some stand out performances included Sandy, Patrick and SpongeBob. Sandy’s actress was very solid in the characterisation of the classic squirrel, using a great accent. Her vocals also were really strong throughout. Patrick’s actress embodied the character really well too, giving the classic Patrick you would expect. She sung very well alongside SpongeBob during ‘BFF’. Though the outstanding performance was by SpongeBob’s actor. He really was giving his best throughout, being the loveable sponge we all know. His vocals during ‘(Just a) Simple Sponge’ were phenomenal, hitting each note perfectly!
I look forward to watching more from Act II Theatre Company in the future. Well done all involved!
