A new play has developed in Cambridge at the Corpus Playroom, discussing masculinity
Put It In, I’m Ready is a new play developed by Tom Heald. The show follows a man hiding from his date as he reveals information about his mental health (including his own depression and suicide attempt). Following this, topics also covered discuss the ideal ‘alpha males’ which lead men in the modern world to have inconceivable pressure to be a ‘proper man’: a topic which has been taboo for many years. The production discusses the importance of reaching out and asking for help, whilst acknowledging the courage this takes as a man nowadays.
Picking up in the toilet, Tom Heald plays an unnamed man who is struggling on a first date. The lighting is used effectively as we transition between each scene in this man’s life. Similarly, the narrative slowly builds to become more emotional and heartfelt as the show continues. The idea of an ‘alpha’ man is a topic which is prevalent for lots of men nowadays, and this play really captured this essence very well. The audience were moved by the story and acting, as the whole show was very empowering and authentic in its approach: giving a real insight into depression and the sense of not being good enough.
Heald is the only actor in the show and this leads to him having a lot of weight to carry the narrative. His performance was moving, emotional and phenomenal to watch! Being able to move between darkly comedic moments to a nuance, real feeling was weaved fantastically and you can tell there was so much passion behind the performance. Put It In, I’m Ready is eye opening, real and compelling: a piece of theatre the audience will not forget for a long time.
Put It In, I’m Ready runs till Saturday, book now!
Tickets for this performance were provided complimentary. Many thanks to Tom Heald (developer of Put It In, I’m Ready) for reaching out and all the best with your production!
