This brand new musical sets to catapult you into the stratosphere (with some amazing puppetry)!

Space Hamlet (2025) tells the compelling story of Prince Hamlet in the distant future. After the death of his father, Hamlet attempts to go on an internal quest of revenge against his uncle. On the way, Hamlet encounters many different creatures and sings his merry way through his legendary quest. Obviously, the show is clearly following the story of Hamlet by Shakespeare. If you are aware of this story, the plot points followed in this show are clear. This show is a brand new production by Open Door Theatre, a company that I in particular are keen to follow since watching their preview of Maud and the Ring back in November.

Matthew Rhodes is the musical director of the show and has helped to form a chunky soundtrack. I felt that some of the songs stood out compared to others. One specific song is by Ophelia (played by Ruby Bardwell-Dix) which had just the right amount of sweetness and comedy. Hamlet (played by Nic Gordon) also sang some powerful rock ballads. He did a good job of singing these considering the notes he had to sing! I do feel that some songs felt less important and could do with further refinement: questioning the need for them. However, on the whole, the soundtrack is well put together. The set is also simple but effective, giving an out-of-this-world aesthetic.

Again, Hamlet (played by Nic Gordon) really gives a fantastic performance! He was very good at acting out the story and acted each scene flawlessly. Another cast member which I personally thought did amazingly was Amy Beven. Bevan played a variety of characters but also sung some of the best songs in the show. Her puppetry was also brilliant: showing a clear experience is lots of art forms. On the puppetry, it is incorporated into this show very well. It feels at times like Avenue Q in terms of puppetry, which is a huge complement.
The show still has a way to go to reach for the stars but I would highly recommend going to watch this new piece of theatre as it is very rare we get brand new musicals! Space Hamlet is playing at the Norwich Puppet Theatre from the 5th August to 9th August!
