Holy beats and heavenly voices, the sisters are ready to bring down the house!

Sister Act is a comedy musical which is based on the classic film of the same name. Deloris Van Cartier is a disco diva who dreams of the stage and a life in the spotlight. Though when placed under protective custody with nuns, she has to adapt to life in the convent. After discovering the choir, Deloris brings a piece of star quality to the group: ready to make them all glitzy superstars! This is all whilst her ex partner Curtis attempts to find her. I have thoroughly enjoy every show I have seen by BOS musical theatre group (Big Fish, The Addams Family and Rock of Ages being some of my highlights). This drama group have some exceptionally talented members and always know how to put on a show. Similarly, the Blackfriars Art Centre is a fantastic venue: feeling very homely and traditional. Therefore, I was prepared for a brilliant show, which they truly delivered on.

The lighting was very good and worked well with the set. Talking of, the set was well it together and impressive to look at. It really helped you feel part of the show. Similarly, the costumes were spot on for the many different characters, being very authentic to the original movie. The ensemble were having so much fun which really came across great. The vocals were also very good, adding value to each song they sang together with nice harmonies.

Phil Mills, Oliver Norman and Jamie Shave play Curtis’s henchmen, who get some of the best comedy parts in the show. They all excelled with their characters and were great to watch. Stuart Bell, Sabrina Reeson, Lauren Charles-Meyer and Beau Williams play members within the convent. Each of them had their own time to shine which came across well in the show. All of the supporting roles vocals were also really commendable and showed a lot of effort.

Sister Act, 2025

George Tompkins plays Curtis Jackson, the ex partner to Deloris who is out for revenge. Tompkins did a fantastic job as portraying the character, as well as having amazing vocals. Natasha Cooper plays Mother Superior, the leader of the nuns and someone who struggles to bond with Deloris’s unique ways. Cooper really embodied her character and was great to watch on stage, as well giving some great solo performances. Aaron Carpenter plays Eddie Souther, a helpful police officer who helps Deloris in her difficult situation. Carpenter’s solo number was really fun and showed lots of effort! He has a great voice and the dancing alongside this worked well.

Sister Act, 2025

The stand out performance within this show has to go to Chantelle Gill as Deloris Van Cartier, the true disco diva who is eager for the spotlight but finds herself down on her luck. I’ve seen Deloris done quite a few times but never have I seen someone sing ‘Fabulous Baby’ or ‘Sister Act’ as well as Gill sung it! Her angelic vocals were on full display and really helped to soar the production. Beyond her amazing vocal performance, Gill understands her character and is a perfect Deloris. She really has the energy to bring this diva to life and it looks like she was having fun whilst doing it!

Sister Act continues to play at the Blackfriars Art Centre until Saturday 15th November. Book your tickets now!
