Half Man Half Bull at Norwich Stage 2 Review

A charming and unique storytelling show which breaks the norms: achieving way above what you believe could be possible.

Half Man Half Bull is a modern musical with a twist. Instead of telling just one myth from Greek history, the story focuses on two: Theseus and the Minotaur and Daedalus and Icarus. Both stories surprisingly intertwined to present a piece of theatre which reminds us what makes these myths special: the human message behind each one. The story is told via song, rap and spoken word which really gives the show an identify of its own. The show has been created by Wright and Grainger, with a production touring the UK currently after their Edinburgh Fringe debut in 2024. At Norwich Stage 2, the show is part of the REWRITES which helps to promote new musical theatre across the UK.

Both sides of this show work incredibly well! I’ve never seen a piece of theatre which has been presented in this way and I was quite intrigued throughout. The lighting design worked very well alongside the vocals, bringing the piece altogether. Following on from this, the vocal performances were really great. I do see some Hamilton-Like inspiration in the rap music, but that’s not a bad thing at all. I think the stand out vocals went to the guest performer Aminita Francis who was amazing! Overall, the whole company has something really special here and I’m looking forward to their continual development. Phil Grainger, Oliver Tilney and Alexander Wright have made something very special.

Half Man Half Bull is on a UK tour until 16th November. I would highly recommend coming and supporting this company/show. I’m hopeful I’ll get the chance to see Helios soon!
