A poignant piece of theatre which makes you think.

Dial 1 For UK is a one-man play by Mohit Mathur. The story follows Uday Kumar, an Indian man who has worked in a call centre in New Delhi. When the chance to come to England opens, Uday is ready to jump at the opportunity. After interviewing Mohit Mathur, I was excited to watch this new production when it arrived in Peterborough!

The story is told through the use of photos as Uday navigates different aspects of UK life. This storytelling technique worked excellently for this piece: making the one-man play feel alive. Uday is a captivating and optimistic character at the first and Mathur portrays this perfectly. He often had the audience laughing and was able to capture humour within his performance. As the play develops, more challenging issues arise and change the projectory of the production. Mathur is perfect within the role and understands Uday’s character fully. Moreover, the set was unique with the use of red ribbon to tie pieces of the story together to a missing person case. At the core, this show is a message of dreams, survival and reality: a powerful piece of theatre to watch in modern society. As someone who can’t identify with Uday much, I felt a great sense of enlightenment throughout the show, opening my eyes to the topic at hand and the experiences shown. I’d highly recommend this show to everyone.
