Following a memorable evening with Fantasia Orchestra, I had the opportunity to sit down with its founder and Artistic Director, Tom Fetherstonhaugh to discuss the orchestra’s origins, growth and vision as one of the UK’s most exciting orchestral ensembles during Fantasia Orchestra’s tenth anniversary.
What began in 2016 as a school project between friends has evolved into a full professional orchestra performing on some of biggest stages, such as on the BBC Proms. Founded by Fetherstonhaugh as a way to bring young musicians together and develop his own opportunities in being an orchestral conductor. Fantasia Orchestra has far exceeded its original ambitions. “I didn’t ever envisage it lasting this long,” Fetherstonhaugh admits. “I’d hoped it would last a couple of years…. it’s continued in a really strong way.”
A defining moment for the orchestra came in 2022 when they were invited to perform at Sotheby’s Jubliee Arts Festival. Tasked with creating a programme celebrating creativity, Fantasia Orchestra began experimenting with the genre-blending approach which has since become its trademark. Classical repertoire now sits alongside jazz, contemporary music and global influences, creating concerts that appeal to both seasoned audiences and first-timers. Fetherstonhaugh explains that while the orchestra embraces innovation with this genre-blending, it never loses sight of classical music. In the most recent concert, works such as Bartók and Shostakovich were mixed with jazz to create a programme inviting audiences who may be less familiar with this classic music.
As both conductor and Artistic Director, Fetherstonhaugh oversees the artistic direction, from programming and collaborations to rehearsals and performances. His role has grown alongside the charity which has required him to balance his creative ambition. Regardless of this, his passion for making music remains unchanged. “I absolutely love making music with our wonderful musicians,” he mentioned. Fetherstonhaugh mentioned that nurturing and supporting emerging talent helps keep this commitment behind Fantasia Orchestra. Building these lasting artistic relationships are an important part of the orchestra’s future beyond this tenth anniversary.
As someone experiencing an orchestra performance for the first time, what stood out most was the atmosphere. The focus, precision and collaboration between musicians was fascinating to witness. Fetherstonhaugh credits the musicians themselves, describing their skills and dedication as something he remains continually “incredibly” humbled by. As Fantasia Orchestra continues to develop further, Fetherstonhaugh is eager to internationally tour to create more collaborations with musicians and allow for ambitious programming.
For those who think orchestral music may not be for them, Fantasia Orchestra offers something refreshingly different. By blending genres while celebrating classical traditions, they are creating experiences that feel both accessible and exciting. After attending my first orchestral concert and speaking to Fetherstonhaugh, I’m intrigued by their upcoming programming.
