Kinky Boots at the London Coliseum Review

All the way from Northampton, London audiences can now enjoy Kinky Boots at the London Coliseum!

Kinky Boots follows the unlikely friendship that develops between “Charlie from Northampton” and “Simon from Clacton”. Their journey encourages audiences to accept people for who they are, which makes it fitting for Pride Month. The story delivers this positive message in a fresh and engaging way, which makes it quite appealing.

Johannes Radebe delivers a phenomenal performance which commands attention throughout the show. His portrayal of Lola strongly highlights his talent as an actor, singer, and dancer. While he can bring lots of fire to the stage, Radebe also delights with a deeply moving and memorable rendition of Not My Father’s Son, which was certainly one of the strongest moments of the musical. Beyond this ballad, Kinky Boots has many other fun songs that help keep the public engaged throughout.

The London Coliseum is a large venue that invites productions to think on a grand scale. Kinky Boots rose to the challenge with an excellent set design, which has a realistic feel. The quality of the lighting design also deserves praise, as the combination of smoke and lights generates an immersive atmosphere.

The main improvement opportunity that I identified was that some scenes felt unnecessarily long. Notably, some comic scenes worked well initially, but audiences grew less enthusiastic about them when they continued for a while. Despite this, the show has lots to offer and is likely to leave audiences smiling as they leave the theatre.

Kinky Boots will continue running at the London Coliseum until 11 July. Watch it if you can!
