Running at the Barons Court Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe, The Perils of Youth is an unforgettable study of family dynamics and what it means to be alive.
Written by Julian Guassardo, The Perils of Youth quickly introduces us to a mother and her son, masterfully played by Maggie Rose and Guassardo, respectively. The bitterness they share drives the play through endless bickering, relentless complaints, and impossible demands. Both performers deliver the script with exceptional precision, drawing frequent laughter from the audience while holding their attention throughout. The script is complex and has an intricate rhythm that can likely be appreciated by both occasional theatregoers and by hardcore Shakespeare enthusiasts.
As hinted at in the show’s description, the play covers dark themes, including death and abuse. These topics are discussed in great detail, very seriously and with a lot of energy, which sometimes ends up transforming the dialogue into comical exchanges. Overall, this works well, as these dialogues are the core of the show. This contrast allows the play to deal with difficult topics without ever losing the audience’s attention.
The Perils of Youth has just finished its run at the Barons Court Theatre, but you can still catch it at the Rosemary Branch Theatre later this month.
Tickets to attend this show were provided complimentary. We wish the show a fantastic run at the Rosemary Branch!
