A one-man ritual that asks questions about the nature of evil and free will, 7-7-7, is running at the Barons Court Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe.

Colin Rayner has crafted a unique experience that captures the audience’s attention from the very first moment and does not let go until it is finished. The show has the audience on the edge of their seats from the moment when Rayner enters the stage in a memorable way. This is partly due to the interesting concept behind 7-7-7. However, it is Rayner’s charisma, gravitas, and magnetic personality that earned him a standing ovation at the end of the performance.

The script is brilliant and has clearly been refined into an engaging piece. It also incorporates some audience participation at points, which was effective given that the audience was already fully immersed in the show. Some parts of the story are left open to interpretation. This works well because it leaves you thinking about the show after it has finished, without feeling that you may have missed anything important.

What makes 7-7-7 stand out is the sense of unease it creates without relying on conventional horror techniques. There are no jump scares, but there is a constant feeling that something is about to happen. Rayner takes advantage of this tension to create an intimate, unsettling, and strangely hypnotic experience.

The set appears simple at first, but the effective use of lighting and practical effects conveys exactly the right atmosphere necessary for this kind of experience to be memorable. These elements elevate the performance further by transforming the space when needed and adding to the sense of mystery.

7-7-7 will continue running at the Barons Court Theatre until 9 August. Try to attend if you can!

Tickets to attend this show were provided complimentary. We wish the show the best in the future!
