Football, sexuality, masculinity, and identity collide in the explosive journey of self-discovery that is Up The a(Rs)e.

Up The a(Rs)e is a one-man show written and performed by George Wigglesworth and directed by Indy Campbell. The story follows a man caught at the crossroads between what his football-centred circle of straight friends and family expects of him and the queer life he is afraid to confront.

Wigglesworth has a talent for reading his audience and keeping it entertained. Many of the show’s comedic resources landed particularly well, and he was able to bring back some of the most effective ones without ever overexploiting them. He is also capable of taking the audience on an emotional journey through his inner struggle. The humour provides a welcome counterpoint to the more emotional aspects of the story, helping the audience digest some of its heavier moments.

At its heart, Up The a(Rs)e is a moving, personal and grounded show. Wigglesworth delivers an excellent performance, particularly when stepping into the roles of the other characters around him, giving each of them a distinct presence. The result is a relatable story that balances humour and emotion while exploring the tension between the person we are expected to be and the person we actually want to be.

We saw Up The a(Rs)e on its opening night. This show will continue running at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre until 22 August. Try to see it if you can!

Complimentary tickets were provided. We wish the show a fantastic run!
