Be prepared for a fairy tale that is quite unconventional!
Shrek the Musical is based on the classic film Shrek which has gone on to be a cultural hit. The story follows Shrek, an ogre who believes no one wants to be his friend so has shut the world out. When a group of magical creatures move into his swamp, Shrek goes on an adventure with Donkey to save Princess Fiona for Lord Farquaad to marry. The musical has slowly become a stable for amateur groups due to wonderful costumes, catchy songs and a strong message of being unique. Melody Allsorts of Downham are an inclusive amateur dramatic group, allowing everyone to take part. This production is directed by Carrie-Ann Lister who has created a magical, fun and creative production, alongside Lizzie Bryant as assistant director and assistant choreographer. Alongside them, Megan Thurley’s choreography is upbeat, engaging and joyful. Other creatives include Rachel Mycock as backstage manager and Jenny Bryant as costume manager. This is a joyful show to watch this August!
The show was fun and engaging for the audience: often having them cheer and clap throughout. The toilet on the side was well made too, though under utilised. Using a curtain alongside the castle set worked well to differentiate between both different environments. Lighting was strong at times and the costumes, which Jenny Bryant was managing, were very accurate and worked well in the show.
The ensemble consists of Lisa Backham, Nat Mills, Lucie Thurley, Vicky Reed, Jess Fayers, Grace Thurley, Mattie Clift, Rose Lutwyche, Aiva Semionova, Alice Thurley, Bella Clift, Ashley Hudson, Amelia Whittaker, Sophie Mycock, Pam Purple, Elija Semionova, Daisy Lister, Megan Thurley and Alana Rose. They have worked very hard with their direction from Lister and choreography from Thurley; clearly having a great time of stage which was felt in the audience.
Dylan Bert plays Pinocchio, leading ‘Story of my Life’ with confidence, with a great voice. Jenny Bryant plays Dragon, who guards Fiona’s castle. Bryant’s rendition of ‘For Forever’ was strong with great vocals. Olivia Fayers plays Lord Farquaad, a man who wants to marry Princess Fiona so he can be king. Fayers had the entertaining quality Farquaad needs: with clear vocals too!
Carrie-Ann Lister plays Donkey, Shrek’s new best friend (whether he wants to be friends or not). Lister was joyful as Donkey and made for great company for Baxter. Lizzie Bryant plays Princess Fiona, a princess who has been stuck in a tower for many years and dreams of being rescue. Lizzie was a stand out in this show, bringing everything from choreography and vocals to another level: especially fantastic in ‘Morning Person’ and ‘I Know It’s Today’. Shane Baxter plays Shrek, the grumpy ogre who learns to open his heart. Baxter has fantastic vocals, especially during ‘When Words Fail’ and ‘Who I’d Be’. He embodied Shrek well and was a great lead!
