One final night out that may change everything forever!
Getting Ready is a new Irish play by Naoise White currently running at the Etcetera Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe. The story follows Lucy, Cara and Faye on their last night out together before going their separate ways and growing up. The night changes the girls in unexpected ways, ready to take on the world. The play is written by a Naoise White who has a strong writing talent, making likeable characters with both a heartwarming and important message of growing up.
The show is set within Lucy’s bedroom as the ladies get ready for a night out at the local. Through this, they take turns to come in and out: having 1:1 conversations as well as groups conversations. I enjoyed how each girl felt unique but a believable friend group: knowing each others’ interests. The set is designed very well, with lots of props to make it feel authentic. The ending was impactful but I wonder whether the script should be extended to give the characters further context. However, I really enjoyed where Faye and Cara’s conversation goes: not causing unnecessary drama.
Maisie Hogan plays Cara who is moving to Australia with her boyfriend Ethan. Hogan is able to balance the confusion Cara is feeling as she attempts to navigate why she feels concerned about her trip. I think Cara’s ending seems ultimately satisfying and Hogan finishes the play by shifting her acting to feel more certain which was very talented. Luisa Fischelt plays Faye who sadly didn’t get her internship in Paris so is not leaving. Faye has lots of emotions and is used to balance Cara and Lucy. Fischelt’s performance felt authentic and her resolution felt genuine. Naoise White plays Lucy who is moving to Copenhagen. Lucy’s house is also being sold so White is able to explore a range of feelings in her role: often being more comedic too. I especially liked White and Fischelt’s dialogue as it added more depth.
Getting Ready plays again tomorrow (10th August) at the Etcetera Theatre. Book your tickets here!
