A very enjoyable and very funny production has opened at the Camden Fringe!
Are You There Mother? is currently as part of the Camden Fringe, with this performance being at the Etcetera theatre before transferring to the Hen and Chickens Theatre for the remainder of the run. After doing a Q & A with the creatives (read more here), we were eager to attend this production. Are You There Mother? follows a struggling actor as they become entangled in a plot to support a woman grieving her own mother. They do this by pretending to be a psychic medium, resulting in role play that goes far longer than it should. The show is cleverly crafted and a joy to watch, being hilarious and entertaining. The production is brought to stage by Righton Productions. The group return to London in October for a new production at The Hen & Chickens Theatre.

Jazmine Sewsanker is the producer of the project and Rhian Holmes is credited as lights, sound and script consultant: working closely with writer Thomas Carruthers. The script is polished, with action happening continuously that allows for the production to stay entertaining. I wonder whether more sound could be used to help transport the audience to each setting (such as when the salmon is done cooking). However, the current sound is used well by adding classic music. Are You There, Mother? mixes between comedic and more serious, balancing this dynamic effectively on stage.

Thomas Carruthers is the writer, actor and director of the production. Carruthers is the heart of the show and is able to captivate audiences with his natural charm and charisma. The way he switches between characters is cleverly executed, with changing in facial expressions and vocal tones to differentiate. Throughout, Carruthers seemingly breaks the fourth wall to tell a joke/be sarcastic. These gathered the biggest laughs from the audience and I think more would’ve been great!

Are You There Mother? continues to play till the 14th August. Book your tickets here!
