A wild, weird, and wonderfully absurd journey through power and masculinity, Dead Effing Rebels has played at Barons Court Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe.
Theatre of Cowards has brought Sylvia Gardner’s new show to the Camden Fringe. Dead Effing Rebels is a queer and interesting take on the corporate world. Gardner wrote and directed the show, with Mika Trench acting as assistant director and tech operator.
The cast of five included Kian Standbridge, Ivy Harper, Rufus Brierley, Ben Oliver, and Gardner. They all seemed comfortable with their parts, despite the complexity of playing the interesting dichotomy that the show was aiming for. While they are all very talented, Standbridge and Gardner stand out due to the intensity they brought to their performances. They were capable of rapidly shifting from moments of corporate restraint to bursts of raw emotion.
The set design was simple, but at the same time was everything the show required. The costumes, makeup, and props used as part of the performance were good and further allowed for chaos to ensue whenever needed. The lighting design was also used effectively to mark transitions from one setting to another, helping the audience follow the changes in the story. The combination of these design elements ensured that the performance was engaging throughout, complementing the action on stage and helping to create the show’s distinctive atmosphere.
We saw Dead Effing Rebels on its final performance as part of the Camden Fringe. We wish all the best to the cast and creatives in the future.
