The Love That I’ve Lost opens Thursday 8th October at The Bread and Roses Theatre, allowing audiences into this heartbreaking female led play full of emotional warmth. Learn more about what you can expect:

1: Where did the idea for the story come from?
It draws a lot from my life and my experience with love along with the various women in my life’s stories and struggles. I went through a pretty rough year last year with love, and this play started as a way for me to process all my feelings and try and find what love meant to me and the people around me. It started off with monologues and then from there it just grew.

2: The play asks ‘what is love when you only feel its absence?’. Why was that question important to explore?
I think a lot of time in theatre we see happy loved couples and that’s just not my experience. I wanted to tell a story that was true and raw. Sometimes, people just don’t feel love, but does that mean they aren’t? It was a question that I was trying to figure out and I’ve found a lot of people feel the same, either now or previously. I hope in seeing the play it helps some people and opens eyes for others.

3: Is the play ultimately about romantic love or something much bigger?
At least for the characters it’s about each of their romantic loves and how that love impacts them.

4: What interested you about exploring these themes through a family of three women?
I always knew I wanted to write this play focussing on three women as each of the women relate in some way to a person in my life. I wanted to tell their stories and I wanted to do them justice. While exploring them individually though the thing that I found the most interesting is that while individual, their stories were so connected. I just wanted to explore that more.

5: Memory is described as part of the play. How does this become involved?
I’ve always felt memory and love are tied together. Whether it’s us thinking back on a love or thinking forward towards one and what could be. They go hand in hand. But not to give too much away. Memory is also a big part of one the women’s stories – her partner has dementia so a lot of the time memory is how she finds love.

6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating The Love That I’ve Lost?
Honestly, I’ve enjoyed seeing it finally come together! I started writing the play a year ago and now I have an incredible cast who perform each of the three women with so much care and sincerity. Getting to explore the play physically with them has been truly amazing!
