Screwed opens Monday 24th August at The Libra Theatre Cafe, offering an original play about old university friends reuniting at an annual dinner party. Learn more about what you can expect:
1: What inspired you to first create Screwed?
I (Juliet) wanted to write a comedy that not only encapsulates the dry and witty humour that comes naturally to me, but one where the audience can relate to the awkwardness that can occur onstage, by pushing and exaggerating the most absurd situations. Our ethos is to make the audience laugh and we aim to help facilitate each member to laugh together.
2: Where did the rat come from?
The rat is a pet from the waiters who add many elements of surprise throughout the dinner party. The rat adds comedic effect by adding chaos within an already chaotic dinner party, which make situations present onstage increasingly absurd, and even more entertaining for the audience members.
3: Which characters you are most interested in playing?
We are most interested in playing the waiters because they add a lot of comedy and energy to the play. I like how they contribute to the chaos of the dinner party, especially with moments like bringing in the rat. Also, the freedom to play characters who are constantly reacting to the ridiculous situations around them, while also helping to keep the pace and humour of the scene has been extremely enjoyable throughout the rehearsal process.
4: What do you hope audiences take away from the play?
I want the audience to take away a sense of humour from the play. I hope they enjoy the chaos and ridiculous situations and leave feeling entertained.
5: What has been the biggest challenge in creating the show?
The biggest challenge has been making sure the jokes don’t get lost, especially when there is so much chaos happening on stage. We have to make sure that the audience can follow the narrative whilst also laughing at the jokes. Another challenge has been ensuring that every character gets their moment to shine, rather than one character dominating the scene. This has meant focusing on timing, reactions and giving each character enough space so that their individual humour comes through.
6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating Screwed?
The most enjoyable part of the process has been working as an ensemble. I’ve really enjoyed seeing how everyone’s characters and performances come together to create the chaotic and comedic atmosphere of the play. It has been fun supporting each other on stage, reacting to each other’s performances and making sure that everyone gets their moment.
