A fascinating new darkly comedic piece of drama!
HEEL is a new piece of writing that is currently running at The Libra Theatre Cafe as part of the Camden Fringe. The play follows a sadistic female CEO who abducts a failed actor/drama therapist. She then collars him to the wall of her apartment. An exploration of gender-based desires are confronted and the pair discover more about each other. If you want to learn more about the show, we’ve interviewed creator Delia Frances Kenagy. Check it out here!
The production, written by Delia Frances Kenagy, has been directed by Allissa Flood. Flood understands Delia’s image for the show and has effortlessly made the story come to life. The fight choreography and costuming, also credited as Flood, was perfect for the show: looking realistic from the audience. Alongside this, Conor Costelloe’s lighting design and EJ Walker’s sound design/composition added to the overall aesthetic of the production well. Also credited is Krystal Anderson as prop designer, who has helped make the stage feel more real.
The entire premise of the show was a masterpiece in creating an engaging narrative, whilst being widely dark and comedic at the same time. The way in which the narrative slowly develops and unravels allows for audiences to question the character until the end: making the whole story gripping to watch. In addition to this, the added comedic moments (most notably from the range of men played by Aaron Julius Punnen) were evenly distributed throughout.
Aaron Julius Punnen plays The Intern/The Executive/The Man in the Dog Suit. Aaron is able to play very different characters and make them believable, with each one feeling distinct. Aaron added comedic flair to the production which helped balance the comedy with the darker tones.
Tom Inman played Eli, the man that has been abducted. Inman starts the show with concern and anxiety which supports his eventual change in personality towards the end of the show. His dynamics with Kovari were phenomenal and the chemistry between them was very strong.
Lotti Kovari plays Danika, a slightly psychotic lady who has kidnapped Eli. The way in which Danika starts by being creepily insane was portrayed perfectly by Kovari. I felt her change throughout was perpendicular to Eli, which Kovari embodied during her performance.
HEEL has now completed running at The Libra Theatre Cafe, but we know this will not be the end of this piece. Keep your eyes out for future productions!
Tickets for this production were provided complimentary. Many thanks for the invitation and we wish you all the best!
