Jacobs & Jones with breadcrumbs opens Friday 16th October at Canal Cafe Theatre, bringing a joyful sketch show embracing laughter and fighting the corporate system. Learn more about what you can expect:
1: Where did the idea for Jacobs & Jones with breadcrumbs come from?
We’ve always liked taking the mick out of corporate stuff – especially advertising. You see adverts every day and you’re like “in what world would that be useful, practical, or make my life better in any way?” It’s all fluff. We knew we wanted to make a show with a through line about that. To poke fun at how the vast majority of the human race (including ourselves) are just blindly sucking up any cheap plastic slop put in front of us. Because the world is scary, and if you don’t laugh you’ll cry. Cut to us thinking of a show title. The image came to us – both of us trapped in a cardboard box from the walk-in freezer, our faces wrapped in microplastics, and a breadcrumb-caked hand reaching out to the audience, yearning to be free.
2: Is there a particular part of the production you are most excited for audiences to see?
Yes. The Pork Factory. And no, we’re not going to elaborate on that.
3: Are there any comedians, writers or performers who have particularly influenced your style?
Mitchell & Webb – for their perfect cocktail of dry and silly. Victoria Wood/Fascinating Aida – for magically weaving the funny not only into lyrics, but into the music itself. And Vic & Bob, for dropping the audience in a puddle of absurdity and forcing them to sit in it.
4: How did the production come together?
We did a sketch show a few years ago. It was called Fishing in Puddles… we still have no idea why we called it that. It just sounded funny. And it was great! In fact, some of the best bits from that show are in this one; just too good to get rid of. We always make sketches by trying to make each other laugh. How far can we go? We milk it for every drop it’s worth. And then we painfully strip it all back in the edit. What you end up with is a show, but it’s always changing, always evolving with every performance.
5: As a theatre group based in Weston-super-mare, what does it mean to take your work to London for the first time?
We’re excited! Always good to explore new turf. And it’s great to dive into the deep end, as London will be our debut for this show. We do expect the 5 star treatmen,t of course. Towels in the dressing rooms. A vodka Martini after the show. A chocolate goat in the hotel room… y’know, the usual stuff.
6: What has been the most enjoyable part about creating Jacobs & Jones with breadcrumbs?
Building the Pork Factory. And no, we’re still not going to elaborate on that…
