Gypsy at Norwich Playhouse 2025

The mother of all musicals is back!

Gypsy: A Musical Fable is a classic 1959 musical with a musical score from the great Stephen Sondheim. The show follows the story of Rose attempting to raise her two daughters into stardom. This production has been made by Sound Ideas and has a brilliant set. The design really allowed the show to pop and helped with such a powerful, fun story: at times it did feel a bit empty. The 16 piece orchestra was fantastic from start to finish, giving such elegance to each musical score.

The cast were fantastic! The younger performers showed such promise. The main ensemble were fantastic too, all adding so much value and effortless dancing techniques. Two stand out performances for me include Nina Taylor as Louise and Holly Graham as Rose. Taylor was brilliant as Louise, giving such depth and vocals! I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing her perform before and I’m so glad I got the opportunity. Graham played Rose so well, being both tenacious and confident with fabulous vocals. Both of these performers are worth watching the show alone!

Gypsy is an interesting show for me personally. I do feel that it drags in places but this production tries to remedy the problem. I don’t quite understand the direction with the revolving floor as it didn’t serve much purpose other than looking ‘good’.
