Get ready for a history remix with this stellar cast!
Six – Teen Edition is the junior edition of the original musical Six which has become a cultural phenomenon. After watching Drinking Habits 2 earlier this year, I was excited to return to the Newmarket Kings Theatre! Sarah Smith and Elize Collins direct the young Nomads in this production. The direction was especially impressive due to the larger cast, making the movement feel effective. Alongside this, Rori Saxby’s choreography was uplifting and joyful: akin to the original West End choreography. Rhapsody Rolfe is credited as Musical Director, with Rolfe’s work felt throughout with strong vocals for a young cast.
The set worked brilliantly for the sequences produced, allowing the cast to have different heights. The ensemble as a whole was very strong, adding vocals and dancing to each number. I especially enjoyed the creative choices used throughout to involve more of the younger cast: making the show feel more inclusive. The six queens together sounded fantastic, especially in ‘Six’ and ‘Ex-Wives’. They were also able to have fun during ‘House of Holbein’ which was a joy to watch!
Starting the show was Malika Yahouni as Catherine of Aragon with ‘No Way’. Yahouni felt confident with this high energy song and was able to bring her own character to life well. Second, Tia Thornton as Anne Boleyn who perfectly encapsulates this character: with high energy and charm. Her number ‘Don’t Lose Your Head’ was fun and had great vocals. Ending Act one, Phoebe Woodcock as Jane Seymour sung ‘Heart of Stone’: my personal favourite song from Six. Despite being a challenging number, Woodcock rose to the occasion and delivered this moving number!
Opening Act 2, Alex Parsons as Anna of Cleaves had everyone moving with ‘Get Down’. Parsons embodies the character of Anna of Cleaves with confidence and was fantastic! Hollie Hartwell as Katherine Howard was next with ‘All You Wanna Do’. Despite some technical difficulties, Hartwell powered on and delivered the strongest performance of the night: she should be incredibly proud. Lastly, Olivia Rowan as Catherine Parr sung ‘I Don’t Need Your Love’ which was phenomenal. Her vocals were superb and she was well worth waiting for!
