A journey down memory lane and exploration of identity!
One Time for the Birthday Girl! is a one woman show currently running at the Hen & Chickens Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe. The story follows the Birthday Girl as she is ready to answer all the questions whilst turning 30. This takes us on a trip down memory lane by exploring Black British girlhood in the 00s-10s. Along the way, we discover what identity and self-acceptance looks like and the play leaves the door open to asking questions about societal pressures placed on women.
The set was laid out like a birthday party which included party streamers, a cake and chairs. Alongside lighting that stimulated a party, the show was able to effectively take us to this setting. The story felt empowering and honest, which is very appropriate for this piece. I wonder whether more sound could be added to empower the production further: though it works well in the current format.
Kaneesha is able to effectively navigate the audience through her life, including her identity development and understanding of what makes her happy. She has a way of communicating with the audience that felt real, whilst also using 00s-10s references that felt fun. Kaneesha is the heart of the show and the audience gained a deeper understanding of her throughout the stories she tells.
One Time for the Birthday Girl! continues to play until the 22nd August at the Hen & Chickens Theatre. Book your tickets here!
Tickets for this production were provided complimentary. Many thanks to Kaneesha for organising and we wish you all the best!
